Having started her ultrarunning career in 1998, Edna Jackeline Vazquez is an ultrarunning veteran, having represented her native Mexico in the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and competing all over the world. A U.S. citizen since 2013, Edna has run countless races with distances from 50 to 100 miles, but her crowning achievement was, in 2016, being the first Mexican-American to ever complete the 4 Deserts race series – four 250 km self-supported stage races across the most inhospitable deserts of the world – staged by internationally renowned race company Racing the Planet.
A motivational speaker using her ultramarathoning experiences to inspire others, Edna was one of only 40 individuals rewarded with Negocios Now’s 2017 “Latinos 40 Under 40” award for her outstanding achievements in sport and community leadership. In 2016 she also received an Outstanding Achievement Award from National Autonomous University of Mexico’s Chicago Red de Talentos organization while continuously representing organ and tissue donor foundation Gift of Hope.
With a bachelor’s degree from the University of Monterrey in Mexico, graduate work at the University of Seville in Spain and an MBA from Chicago’s Robert Morris University, Edna has long emphasized education as a major component of healthy living while always smiling and supporting others in their athletic endeavors. Jeff Lung has been a successful personal trainer and group fitness instructor working in the fitness industry since 2012. He founded Iron Lung Fitness, a personal training company that empowers individuals to take control of their lives and get in the best shape possible. His weight loss success stories and other examples of helping others reach their fitness goals are as numerous as they are inspiring.
Jeff is a seasoned marathoner, ultramarathoner and boxer with a passion for total body fitness. He is a two-time Boston Marathon finisher, a Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run finisher and a Chicago Golden Gloves boxing champion. His self-inspired passion, hard work and dedication have led to as much success in sport as in business.
In addition to being a seasoned fitness expert, Jeffery received his bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College while going on to be a trilingual Fulbright scholar, speaking English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese fluently. Contact Jeff at email@example.com
Monica is a lifelong learner and teacher. Since 1989, she has practiced diverse styles of yoga. When Monica retired from a career as a court reporter, she began searching for her dharma. It was after the success of using alternative and complementary methods to heal her body from two serious medical diagnoses that she rediscovered the holistic benefits of yoga.
Through her studies as well as the guidance of her teachers, the teacher within blossomed which allows Monica to share her knowledge and experience in an effective and safe manner. Her classes are a blend of strength and flexibility, using intelligent sequencing while weaving in the breath to connect mind and body.
Monica has been a dedicated student of Vive Healthy's Jeff Lung since May of 2014. She believes in the benefit of all types of exercise. As Jeff would say, "motion is lotion". David Driscoll’s teaching is a reflection of what he’s learned on the mat under the guidance of his excellent teachers. He studied Ashtanga Yoga in the lineage of Pattahbi Jois for five years, earned his 200-hr teaching certificate at the Hatha Yoga Center in Seattle in 2015, and is currently completing a 500-hr certification through Tejas Yoga in Chicago. He is also a writer, husband, and father of two young girls.
David’s classes present a playful space for any level of practitioner to explore the physical and subtle practices of yoga. Expect a blend of heating movement and restorative pause with an emphasis on steady, meditative inquiry into the experience of each asana (posture). Classes will aim to systematically stretch and strengthen the body, awaken the mind, and give students the tools to develop more vitality, clarity, and equanimity in their lives. With a storied career in salsa, merengue and Latin rhythms from his native Veracruz in Mexico, Israel Landa has been a dance instructor since 2002 and a staple of the Chicago Zumba scene since 2014. He is the founder of Chicago’s Zumba FEST and a well-known personality throughout the city for his energy and passion for wellness through dance. His unique, upbeat teaching style makes each class an event – a fun, exhilarating party for all! He is a certified Zumba instructor with additional certifications in Zumba Toning, Zumba Sentao and Zumba Kids.
Kiran is a Registered Dietician Nutritionist (RDN) with a Masters degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has worked with diabetes patients, taught courses at UIC and consulted for chefs, calculating nutrition facts and content for recipes. She has worked in various school environments with experience in the National School Lunch Program as well as the Child & Adult Care Food Program coordinating efforts of the food service staff in order to promote sound nutrition and healthy eating.
Kiran is also experienced in one-on-one nutrition counseling, small interactive group classes and teaching children nutritional classes. She loves working in the nutrition field because it aligns with her core beliefs. She finds it extremely important to make time to take care of one’s self. Living healthy requires a holistic approach that incorporates physical activity, healthy eating, adequate sleep, hydration, positive attitude and minimizing stress. Kiran says, “It’s never too early or too late to be the best you.”
Internationally trained, Lhendup (Lenny) Bhutia is an Executive Chef at Mable’s Table with Chef-Owner Anthony Reyes. Lhendup oversees and leads the entire culinary operation for Mable’s Table – a restaurant inspired by handed down recipes alongside a genuine, homegrown love of cooking.
Bhutia’s culinary career includes stints at Chicago’s Fig and Olive, the Rosebud Restaurant Group, Capital Grille and the Rare Steak House in Madison, WI.
He is the father of two girls (Nordon and Saoirse) and one boy (Oisin). A native from Northeast India in the foothills of the Himalayas, Lenny was born and raised as a Tibetan Buddhist in a small town called Kalimpong and enjoys sharing his cooking expertise to better the lives of others.
